Here’s Why Me-Time Is So Important for You

We’re always soooooo busy. Waking up in the morning, getting your children to and from school, driving for hours, answering calls, meetings, shopping for groceries, doing house chores and let’s not forget, taking care of your children.

How many times a day do you feel like you’re out of breath? We’re guessing aplenty. You feel stuck in this endless cycle  of 24 hours a day and even on weekends, you may feel like you don’t have time for yourself.

And Sunday afternoon comes in and Sunday Scaries starts to overwhelm you as you think about the impending doom of the upcoming week.

It feels like everyone around you doesn’t get that you are only ONE person. Catching up to everything is tiring. No… let’s rephrase that. It’s EXHAUSTING.

And because of this, you need to have your Me-Time. Taking time for yourself is vital. We often prioritize everyone’s needs but our own because we don’t want to be seen as someone who is selfish but that’s actually not healthy.

A highly expert psychologist, Dr Almuth McDowall’s 2015 research suggests those who experience high-quality Me-Time are more engaged and therefore, more productive at work.

So, if you’re on the fence about having your me-time, we have listed down 5 reasons why me-time is so important for you.

You will enjoy self-discovery

We all must have that moment where we need to just stop what we are doing and question some of the most important things in our lives.

  • What are our core values?
  • What is our purpose in life?
  • What is important to us?
  • Where do we see oursleves in the next 5 years?

Asking these questions will make us realize if our day-to-day work is aligned with our goals and achievements. If it’s not, then you have the advantage to change the course of your life accordingly and be a happier person.

You will improve your concentration and have better focus

There are times where you will feel numb when you are in the process of completing a task or solving a problem. If you feel like you don’t seem to be getting anywhere, then that’s the cue for you to take a break.

Having your me-time will allow you to decompress, reduce stress and relax for a little while. This is the time for you to do something you enjoy and not put your brain under pressure.

Please close your to-do list book and just enjoy your day doing what you love. Sometimes, you will find the solution to your everyday problem when relaxing because you are not trying to force an answer out of yourself.

Once you have had your me-time, rest assured that your mind will be clearer and you will ace at every meeting with flying colors.

You will be more productive

Having a long list of tasks and working from the moment you wake up until seconds before you fall asleep is not a healthy lifestyle. Your brain wasn’t built for extended periods of focus and concentration. You ought to take regular breaks from time to time if you want to constantly stay productive.

Doing something enjoyable and entertaining during your breaks will refresh you and get you back on track. Plan on activities like hiking a mountain, running a marathon or cycling 40 km a day. Anything that will get your body moving and heart pumping is great!

You will give the best for your loved ones

How can you give the best to your family and friends if you yourself are not at your best? If you’re stressed out about work and you walk into your house looking like a living dead, what good will it do to you and your family, especially your children?

Do you have a mirror somewhere around you while you’re reading this? If not, then use your phone’s camera, look at the screen and see if you still recognize the person that’s looking back at you.

Unless you say yes, then it’s time for you to go on a short break. Find back the real you that enjoys his/her life to the fullest. Trust the process of having your me-time and remember that you are doing this for your loved ones including your children.

You will realize the importance of work-life balance

Understanding the importance of taking care of your own needs before others makes it easier to create an organized work-life balance.

Having a proper work-life balance means your stress will reduce significantly, your body will have plenty of rest and your relationships with your family and friends will be stronger.

You will also use the word ‘no’ more frequently than before and this is for your own good as your health comes first before anything else. Rather than saying yes to unpaid hours, you will start saying no as your family is waiting for you at your home. But of course, everything needs to be polite and well-mannered. This will allow you to manage the important things in our life more efficiently and effectively.
